'No cruelty, Darren,' I called after him as he half-ran up the stairs, weightless as a fox. 'Lena won't stand for it.'

I did not need unnecessary complications with Lena.

She was outside: my chance to make amends to show that I was really interested in her. Lena had discovered a segment of soil that could be used to grow vegetables and had decided that Darren should serve up organic food. There had been some light rain so the earth was less caked than usual and Lena was trowelling hard.

'Ah,' I said, breathing in with theatrical vigour. 'What fine air! I'm looking forward to having strangers in the house!' That was my way of reminding Lena that she would soon need to pin on a smile and act as a charming hostess. She didn't look up.
